So, you are moving to Papua. That means you will be living with tribal people in grass skirts with painted faces right?! Um...no. National Geographic photographers would have you believe that most of the tribes scattered around Papua's remote mountain tops still look a little like this. In reality, it has been decades since many of the tribes, even in the interior, began wearing modern clothing. This does not mean that they have lost the uniqueness of their culture or have become westerners by a different name. All it means is that their aren't as many photo ops for tourists. I read on one website that there are tourist companies that even advertise "first contact" encounters with tribes. That is, they organize a set up to make unsuspecting tourists believe that they are the very first outsiders to communicate with a particular tribe. Sigh. In contrast, our interaction with the nationals will be much less photogenic and much more meaningful. Here are a few pics from MAF pilots in Papua. Hopefully this will give you a more accurate glimpse of what our lives will look like in Papua.
